NIWA

NIWA - National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research
Artificially - fake
Atmospheric - the thing in the sky that keeps all
High-resolution - means better quality
Examined by scientists - that means that scientists studys it.
Submersible - means it is a small submarine
Enabled - if you are Enabled you can do your work.
Seabed - is the thing at the bottom of the sea.
  • How do the scientists study the reef? What are they trying to show or figure out?  Of how much or lower their ph can go.
  • Why are the NZ scientists testing in an "artificially acidified sea water" - what does this mean?  It's like a fish tank where they use it to experiment on something.
  • Why does Australia have tropical coral and NZ have cold-water coral?   Because Australia is in the equator and NZ is nowhere
 near the equator.
  • Where does NZ cold-water coral grow? How far down? Why can't NZ have a tropical coral?
The corals in Nz mostly grow for about 200 to 1000 meters down below
Nz cant have tropical coral because the temperature for the water in NZ is cold.
  • How do scientists get the cold water coral so they can study it?  Fishermen accidentally fished it up
  • Make a DLO showing 'before and after' type photos of coral reefs. Make a screencast and explain how coral reefs are damaged using your own words.

1 -
Occurs - happens

2 -
Coral goes white because humans throw bleach into the ocean because of the bleaching event. Corals can survive bleaching but suffer mortality.

3 -

4 -when carbon dioxide from factories go in the ocean the coral die because the water gets warmer. also from gas and coal.

5 - Layers of the Ocean
Twilight Zone - 3,300 ft deep
Midnight Zone - 13,00 ft deep
Abyss Zone - 20,00 ft deep
Trench Zone - 24 to 36 ft deep

6 -
If plankton died the food  web would all die, e.g. above.

Zooxanthellae -

Calcification -this hard outer shell is made from the calcium and carbonate salts in seawater by a process called calcification.
Conveniently - this means conveniently there was food there.

Exoskeleton -one piece of coral can be home to many thousands of polyps each of which has a soft body protected by an exoskeleton

Nutrients - Nutrients are something healthy in food etc.

Summary.
Today we read about The Great barrier reef, Me and MIchael learnt about the corals in the reef such as Brain Coral, Staghorn coral , Cauliflower Coral , Elephant Ear Coral and table coral. We learnt that Corals have a clever system and they don’t have to rely on nutrients.

calcium builds up on rocks which forms the exoskeleton. Polyps are inside the exoskeleton ; they absorb sunlight and turn it into food. When the coral dies the exoskeleton stays there and new coral grow on top of it.

Reef Shark= Reef sharks are sharks that live near coral reefs in tropical waters around the world.

clan= clan is kind of like a group of anything.

mesmerised=capture the complete of someone's attention.

emperor= a sovereign ruler of an empire.

Cauliflower coral=A cauliflower coral head is a colony of minute animals called coral polyps that make up the living animal tissue. ... Cauliflower corals can function as carnivores, their polyps have tentacles to capture small planktonic animals drifting over the reef.

snorkelling= swim using a snorkel

Staghorn coral=a large stony coral with branches likened to antlers.

Clown fish= clown fish is a fish that looks like finding nemo.

vibrantly=bright

``Where are the reefs? The reef is near australia.

How were coral reefs made? Coral reefs are when coral  grows on  rocks, and fish come to live in the coral.

Name 10 animals that live in coral reefs? Clown fish, jellyfish, snapper, eels, reef sharks, parrotfish, anemones, see stars, crabs and shrimps.

What is ocean acidification and why is it bad? If the earth is warm then the ocean is warm and if the ocean is too warm then the coral will die and the fish will die.

ecosystem=how animals live together in the same place.

biology= a study of living things.

ecology= study of how living things live together.

teem= if something is teeming with live then it means it is stronger.

Greenhouse gas= greenhouse gases are bad like carbon dioxide, they get trapped around the earth and they are warming up the earth.
